What is 3D/4D ultrasound?

Like a traditional ultrasound, 3D/4D ultrasound uses high-frequency sound waves to create high definition images that can be viewed on a monitor screen. In a 3D ultrasound, a lifelike still image is created for your baby. 4D technology allows you to actually watch your baby move around in real time.

When is the best time to schedule a 3D/4D ultrasound?

It is best to perform a 3D/4D ultrasounds after 28 weeks gestation since this is the time of pregnancy when there is usually an adequate amount of amniotic fluid around the baby. Adequate amniotic fluid is required to obtain clear pictures.

Are there any risks to performing a 3D/4D ultrasound?

Current understanding suggests that ultrasound poses no detectable risk to either baby or mother. However, this is not to say that future studies will not discover new risks. At the Women’s Health Center, we follow the ALARA (As Low As Reasonably Achievable) principle, using the lowest ultrasound power level for the shortest duration of time to complete each ultrasound exam.

Can my family members come in to view the 3D/4D scan?

Yes! We welcome family members to share in the bonding experience that occurs during the 3D/4D ultrasound session.

What is the price of a 3D/4D ultrasound session?

The price of a 3D/4D ultrasound scan, including pictures, is $125. 3D/4D scans are not typically covered by insurance. Payment is required at the time of your ultrasound in the form of cash, check, or credit card.
